Tales from the Mommy Trenches

At our six month well check, the pediatrician kept saying he couldn’t believe she was six months old already. I’m glad I’m not the only one.

She is a chubby, long little one with a head size that is literally off the charts. Huh. It doesn’t look at that big to me. But apparently, she is supporting a cabezón. Clearly, it’s full of brains.

Milestones: Sitting up unsupported for a few minutes! First solid food (I mashed up some banana for her). She must have finally rolled from her tummy back to her back because I have found her pretty far away from her play mat. I have yet to actually witness it, though (bad mommy). She much prefers to fuss until I roll her back for her. She is starting to babble a little bit, and I could have sworn I heard her say “uh oh” in her car seat the other day. Impossible, you say? Keep in mind her head is off the charts, mmmkay?

Likes: Her rock n play. She only sleeps through the night if she is in it. The pediatrician seems to think that this is a problem. Some people just like to watch the world burn. She loves nursing, her sisters (even though they accidentally squish her sometimes), her daddy, laughing at my singing, gumming her little toes, being tickled, nice warm baths, her exersaucer, being held, and good old Sofie the Giraffe.

Dislikes: Sleeping in her crib in Ruthie’s room. Yes, we have begun to try the room sharing experiment, and it hasn’t been going well. She cries all night and keeps poor Ruth from getting any sleep. So, I have been just having her take her naps in her crib to get her used to it. Which leads me to her next dislike: napping for more than half an hour. I have tried everything, and she will not nap for more than 30 minutes, not even in her beloved rock n play. The pediatrician says this is because her rock n play is her sleep crutch? The guy’s got theories. She also loathes banana. This is her first solid food I am trying, and when she sees the spoon she closes her mouth as tightly as she can and glares at me sternly. I manage to slip the spoon into her mouth anyway because haha you don’t have teeth yet and she promptly shudders and gags the second she tastes the banana. I seem to remember none of the girls’ first foods went over very well, so I’m hoping she just isn’t accustomed to it yet. She still hates the bottle and pouts her lip so pitifully if she even sees one. She also is extremely offended if you wake her up to try and dream feed her. Lesson learned.

She really is the sweetest little dumpling and such a happy little baby. I love that cheeky grin she gives me whenever I look at her. Babies are the most wonderful creatures. Whenever I come back to her, she smiles like just seeing my face makes her day.  I find myself silently thanking God for my girls several times a day, every day.
