Baby Boy Stuff

I feel like for my other pregnancies, I might have done more tedious pregnancy updates. I must be losing my grip!

I am 23 weeks as of yesterday. People keep asking me how I’m feeling, and then immediately apologizing and asking me if I hate that question. On the contrary! Kvetching about my pregnancy discomforts is my favorite pastime. Pregnant and geriatric people have that in common. So I’ll do it here too, you lucky readers, you. Nausea and vomiting-wise, this has been exactly the same as my girl pregnancies. I’m still extremely nauseated the entire pregnancy (so far), especially in the morning. I have tried it all these past six pregnancies, but quite frankly the only thing that helps is medication. Zofran or Unisom work the best. Unisom is great at night, and Zofran is great if I actually need to be conscious. I’m getting heartburn already, which is early for me. Usually I don’t get that until the third trimester. I’m ok with it, though, because it is an excellent reminder not to gain ten million pounds. I have symphysis pubis dysfunction just like I did for Regina’s pregnancy, but as long as I don’t walk around too much, it is bearable. Sitting in the car is particularly painful, though. I am WAY more fatigued for this pregnancy than I was for my girl pregnancies. I mentioned it to my OB, who tested me for thyroid function and iron levels, but he said everything was in the normal range. Apparently, I’m just pregnant with five children under seven running around. Oh, and one with special needs. At least Scott tells me I look cute when I pass out on the couch during our coveted adult time after the kids go to bed. For my next appointment, I get to do the super fun glucose test. Last time, I forgot I was supposed to drink that awful stuff in five minutes, so I had to chug it in more like five seconds when the nurse reminded me time was almost up. That was great for my nausea.

Baby boy had one more biophysical profile with the perinatologist just to double check that his heart looked fine and everything else looked perfectly healthy. He passed with flying colors and the perinatologist told me I was discharged from his care and only needed to see the regular OB from here on out. My placenta was up high on top of my uterus and all of my scar tissue from my C sections is down low, so he said he wasn’t concerned about C section-related placenta accreta. It was surreal walking out of that office with good news for a change. I promised to bring Reggie by to visit one day, though. He took such good care of her in utero.

I must say, I’m having a ton of fun finally buying boy stuff. I’m surprised because I never thought I would. Scott is trying to figure out if we can squeeze all six car seats in the Odyssey or if we’re going to have to spring for the gigantic, hello we’re either Catholic or an airport shuttle van. Ruth’s old infant seat finally expired, so I’m in the market for a new infant seat too. We have been devoted Graco fans and the click and go stroller I have is Graco, but some of these other infant seat brands look pretty cool, I must say.

I started baby wearing with Rose, and have gone from the Moby and Baby Bjorn (I really hated those, y’all), through the Baby K’tan, the Ergo, and the Solly. The Ergo and the Solly are still my two favorites, but neither work all that well for the newborn stage. I was thinking about springing for a ring sling this go-around. I really have my eye on the Wildbird sling, but people seem to really love Sakura Bloom as well. What do you think?

Trying to indulge in some self care, so I finally got my hair cut. During our stressful pregnancy and first year with Regina, the whole self care thing really fell by the wayside. I hadn’t cut my hair in a year or more, I finally went to the eye doctor for the first time in three years last week, and I suppose I should go in for my first teeth cleaning in God knows how long.

Proof of my hair cut. Yes, my hair was even longer than this, but reallllll ratty and damaged at the ends. So glamorous.

This pregnancy seems to be dragging on and on, and I just can’t wait to get this baby boy in my arms, safe and sound! But, I suppose we should probably get the car situation figured out and a name for this bub before he comes. The girls are all really excited to have a baby brother. Ruth has named him “Robin,” Rose has named him “Rerun,” and Wren has named him “Robot.” All good options if we can’t think of anything. Ruth likes “Romeo” too.

I never know how to appropriately end these things, soooooo signing off!

My baby boy is 6 months old and passed out on my chest. He’s baby #3, and the first boy. I LOVED my boy pregnancy. I was so alive, alert, no sickness, I just craved hamburgers and sex. My husband joked that it turned me into a super voluptuous dude lol. Your sweet bump makes me miss being pregnant soooooo bad. But not bad enough to make another one lol!

Good to see this glimpse of you, dear niece — I wish I could drag my old bones down to your house a bit more often to see the Glamorous Gaggle of Girls! Glad you are well (ish, go nausea) and especially that R-boy is well. While I do think “Robot Bass” has an amazing built-in sci-fi story quality to it, I am personally rooting for Rex, King of All the Pink. (PS, I also like Rowan). Love you so!

Iโ€™m a fan of Rerun ๐Ÿ˜‰ so glad all is well with babe.
Random suggestion for a blog post or musing mid-blog post: why the kids have starting with an R sounding names (thatโ€™s the only way I knew how to word it accounting for Wren).
Hereโ€™s to a speedy next few months ๐Ÿ˜˜

The story behind the names, eh? I most certainly can do that. In fact, this pregnancy update was a reader suggestion! Thank goodness for you guys, or the blog would constantly be all ๐Ÿ˜ถ

Check out the Cybex Aton infant car seat. It has a very narrow base and Iโ€™ve heard it works well for a three across set up. We have one and I really love it. Itโ€™s very light and can be made compatible with lots of strollers with a clip on accessory. A friend of mine recently sprung for three Dionos that fit well 3 across in her very small SUV. It can be done!

We have 3 Dionos across the back of our car and they fit well. We also bought a Britax infant seat to replace our Graco Snugride because it is quite a bit narrower!

Well, I still read blogs. So yay that you’re continuing!

If the pubis symphysis problems tend to persist after delivery, I’d borrow a ring sling and see if it works for you. The asymmetry didn’t work well for me. I’d jut one hip out and then be in more pain from twisting all those pelvic joints. (There are three pelvic joints and I can show you exactly where each one is because I have had cortisone shots in each–ouch!) I have to keep really square and evenly loaded side to side, so no ring slings and no hip carries.

So excited to “meet” Robin/Romeo/Rerun/Robot. In due time, of course! Other people’s pregnancies seem to fly by, but never one’s own.

The SPD magically vanished once Regina was born, so Iโ€™m hoping this will be the same. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ If not, there is always the Solly!
